Microsoft “Windows” Barrelfish OS

You’ve likely heard of Microsoft’s next-gen operating system projects Midori and Singularity, but earlier this month researchers released a prototype for another OS, code-named Barrelfish. Barrelfish is an OS written specifically for multicore environments. It hopes to improve the performance of boxes with such chips by creating a network bus, if you will, between cores. Today such systems tend to share resources like memory. As demand increases, performance of the box decreases as shared resources don’t scale well. Barrelfish instead passes messages between cores on its bus, and reportedly uses a database-like approach to keep track of the hardware available. (more…)

Windows 8 Features Revealed

As from Microsoft’s job opening:

For the upcoming version of Windows, new critical features are being worked on including cluster support and support for one way replication. The core engine is also being reworked to provide dramatic performance improvements. We will also soon be starting major improvements for Windows 8 where we will be including innovative features which will revolutionize file access in branch offices

Some of the features include:

Distributed File System Replication (DFSR) service: A multi-master replication engine set up for folder synchronization across multiple servers. This may be something we will be seeing in Windows 8 Server.
Major improvements in BranchCache: BranchCache was a new feature developed in Windows 7. Basically when data from an intranet website or file server is accessed, it caches those files locally so the next user can access them more quickly. Major improvements can be expected for BranchCache.

Microsoft’s explanation

DFSR is Microsoft’s premier file replication engine and is an integral part of our branch office strategy and File Server role. It can scale to thousands of servers and replicate hundreds of terabytes of data. We have shipped the technology that powers file sharing in Windows Live Messenger, Windows Meeting Spaces (Vista) and Branch Office replication in Windows Server 2008 which has strong customer deployment. DFSR technology saves MS-IT and our customers more than 80% WAN bandwidth by using advanced On-The-Wire differential compression,” the software giant adds in the job posting.

Windows 8 Confirmed

Sinofsky, the former head of the Office project, is implementing the same development strategy with Windows as with the Office System. Smaller incremental releases separate by smaller periods of time (just two years for Office). In this context, Windows 7 could very well be nothing more than a pit stop to Windows 8. Delivered just three years after Vista, Windows 7 will only serve to prepare the fertile soil for Windows 8. And in this regard, Windows 8 will bring on the true Windows evolution, with Windows 7 being somewhat of a more modest release. Still, at this point, it is all nothing more than speculation, especially with the Redmond company completely mute on the subject. (more…)

Are you excited? Microsoft Windows Midori (Windows 8) is the next generation OS.

According to Microsoft

There’s a seemingly related (related to Singularity) project under development at Microsoft which has been hush-hush. That project, codenamed ‘Midori,’ is a new Microsoft operating-system platform that supposedly supersedes Windows. Midori is in incubation, which means it is a little closer to market than most Microsoft Research projects, but not yet close enough to be available in any kind of early preview form. (more…)
